Mouthguards

Invest in mouthguards

When it comes to mouthguards, you shouldn’t take a one size fits all approach, because it doesn’t.

A custom made mouthguard is specifically designed to the shape of your mouth for maximum protection – impressions of your teeth and gums are taken to provide the most accurate image of your mouth. A mouthguard is then made from those impressions for a custom fit.

Not only will you find this is much more comfortable than other mouthguards, on impact it will cushion the right areas to avoid unnecessary loss of teeth.

Other mouthguards available are not designed specifically for your mouth or are not fitted professionally therefore allowing for space between your teeth and the guard which can be uncomfortable and more importantly not properly protect your teeth when playing contact sport.

Choosing the right mouthguard will not only create a comfortable environment for your teeth and gums but will also provide you with the best possible protection, so choose wisely.

Sideline the sports drinks

It’s rare to see a professional athlete reach for a sugary sports drink during their work out, unless they have signed some kind of promotional deal. This is because their diets are so well managed that sugary sports drinks just don’t make the cut.

Choosing sugary sports drinks means the bacteria in your mouth will use the sugar to produce an acid that weakens the hard outer shell of your teeth. This may increase your risk for cavities over time.

So, if you need to quench your thirst, follow in the footsteps of favourite professional athletes and reach for water instead. It’s better for hydration, overall health (including dental health) and wellbeing.

Follow a daily dental care routine

You may be a sports star, but ultimately you’ll need to follow the same kind of home based dental car routine as everyone else.

Research has shown that exposure of teeth to fluoride is directly responsible for a reduction in decay.

Fluoride enhances the ability of the tooth’s surface to resist acid attacks, hypersensitivity and decay. Therefore, everyone over the age of three should be brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, drinking fluoridated tap water will directly benefit the teeth.

The importance of an effective oral hygiene routine cannot be overemphasised. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day, in conjunction with regular professional cleaning appointments with our team, will keep your teeth and gums healthy and your breath fresh.

Recent studies have indicated a link between poor oral health and poor general health. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and has been associated with cardio vascular disease, diabetes and stroke.
